Cycling Routes Safe for Families and Beginners Draw Crowds to West Parks
Protected paths in city green spaces now support new riders and households seeking low-stress outings.
How we reported this
West Parks and Recreation added 4.2 miles of protected cycling lanes across three parks on June 15, giving families and new riders dedicated space away from vehicle traffic.
Interest in beginner-level outdoor activity has climbed this summer as residents look for nearby options that fit busy schedules without requiring advanced skills or equipment.
Routes Through Elmwood and Willow Creek
The new lane along Cedar Avenue in the Elmwood district runs flat for 1.8 miles and connects directly to Willow Creek Park, where a second loop circles the playground and picnic area. A third segment opened last month at Maple Grove Park near the West Community Center, where staff set up a free helmet-fitting station every Saturday morning.
West Cycling Club volunteers lead short group rides on these paths each Tuesday evening starting at 6 p.m. from the Maple Grove entrance. Riders under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and the club supplies two child trailers for families who register in advance.
Numbers and Next Steps
City data released in May showed a 22 percent rise in park visits by households with children since the protected lanes were first proposed in 2024. Daily bike rentals at the Willow Creek kiosk cost $8 for adults and $4 for children, with helmets included.
Residents can check the West Parks website for updated maps and sign up for the next Tuesday ride through the community center front desk. Those new to the routes are encouraged to start on the Elmwood segment before trying the slight grade near Maple Grove’s north end.
