Pedal Power: Cycling Routes Safe for Families and Beginners in West
From rail trails to riverside paths, West's growing network of low-traffic cycling routes is giving families and first-time riders a genuine reason to ditch the car on weekends.
How we reported this
West's network of dedicated cycling infrastructure now spans more than 38 kilometres of sealed, low-traffic paths, and local cycling advocates say the school holiday period is the single busiest fortnight of the year for beginner riders testing the routes for the first time. With urban speed-limit debates gaining traction globally, cities are increasingly scrutinising how road design shapes who feels safe enough to ride at all. In West, that conversation is already shaping concrete decisions about where new paths go and which existing ones get upgraded first.
The timing matters. Families who might otherwise spend the July school break indoors are looking for structured outdoor activity that doesn't require specialist skills or expensive equipment. Cycling, on the right routes, fits that brief precisely. The question is knowing where those routes actually are.
Where to Start: The Easiest Rides in West
Greenfield Rail Trail is the most beginner-friendly option in the district. The former freight line, converted to a shared path in March 2023, runs 11 kilometres from Greenfield Station through to Hollowtree Reserve, with a sealed surface, no road crossings in the first six kilometres, and a gradient that barely exceeds two percent. Families with children using balance bikes or training wheels routinely complete the Greenfield to Millpond Picnic Area section, roughly 4.2 kilometres return, in under an hour. There are water fountains at the Millpond end and a shaded rest area with bike racks installed by the West Parks and Recreation Directorate as part of its 2024-2026 Active Trails Program.
Riverwalk Corridor, which hugs the eastern bank of the Calloway River from Fenwick Bridge south to Sandstone Flat, is the other standout. The 7-kilometre stretch is separated from vehicle traffic for its entire length and is wide enough, a minimum of three metres throughout, that faster recreational cyclists and slower family groups can coexist without tension. Sandstone Flat itself has a small pump track, installed in late 2024, which gives older children somewhere to practise basic bike-handling skills in a contained, traffic-free environment.
Both routes connect to the broader West Cycling Network map, available free at the West Visitor Centre on Harbour Road and downloadable from the West Council website. The printed version marks gradient ratings, surface types, and the location of every bike repair station along each route, there are currently nine repair stations across the network, each stocked with a multi-tool, tyre levers, and a floor pump.
Getting Equipped Without Breaking the Budget
Not everyone owns a bike. The West Community Bike Library, operated out of the Ferndale Community Centre on Clover Street, loans adult and children's bikes for $8 per day or $25 per week, with helmets included. The program, funded through a West Council community grant renewed in January 2026, maintains a fleet of 34 bikes ranging from 12-inch children's models to step-through adult frames suited to riders who haven't been on a bike in years. Bookings open online each Monday for the following week, and slots during school holidays tend to fill within 48 hours of release.
For those considering buying, West Cycle Co. on Mercer Lane runs a monthly beginner workshop, next session is Saturday 18 July, starting at 9 a.m., covering basic bike fit, gear shifting, and safe braking technique. The two-hour session costs $35 and is capped at 12 participants. Staff there can also advise on the most appropriate entry-level hybrid bikes for the Rail Trail and Riverwalk surfaces, where road tyres are adequate and expensive mountain bike setups are unnecessary.
The practical starting point for most families is simple: pick the Greenfield Rail Trail for a first outing, keep the initial ride to the Millpond section and back, and build from there. The network is designed so that confidence and distance can grow together, with each route connecting to the next once riders feel ready. Check the West Council Active Trails Program page before heading out, trail surface updates and temporary closures are posted there, usually within 24 hours of any change. Local GP clinics in the Ferndale and Greenfield precincts can also advise on whether cycling is appropriate for anyone managing a specific health condition before they head out.
