West Sleep Clinics See Surge in Demand; Here's What to Know
From Riverside Drive to the Northgate precinct, local sleep specialists are seeing a surge in referrals, and residents finally have more options than ever to get tested.
How we reported this
Wait times at West's two main accredited sleep clinics have stretched to eight weeks for new patients, according to scheduling staff at both the Westfield Sleep & Respiratory Centre on Riverside Drive and the Northgate Health Hub's dedicated sleep unit. That's up from roughly four weeks this time last year, a shift that practitioners at both facilities attribute to a combination of GP referral increases and growing public awareness around sleep disorders.
The timing matters. Winter in West traditionally brings a spike in insomnia complaints and fatigue-related GP visits, partly because shorter daylight hours disrupt circadian rhythms and partly because cold, dry air can worsen undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea. Add to that a working population increasingly candid about burnout and the connection between sleep debt and mental health, and the waiting rooms fill quickly.
What a Sleep Study Actually Involves
Most residents are referred through their GP for a polysomnography, the full overnight sleep study that remains the gold standard for diagnosing conditions including sleep apnoea, restless leg syndrome, and parasomnias. At the Westfield Sleep & Respiratory Centre, a standard in-lab study runs approximately $380 out of pocket after a Medicare rebate, though patients with private hospital cover through funds like Bupa or HCF often reduce that to under $100 depending on their tier.
The alternative is a home sleep test, which the Northgate Health Hub began offering as a standalone service in March 2026. The device, a compact unit that monitors oxygen saturation, airflow, and heart rate, is fitted during a brief afternoon appointment and returned the next morning. Results are typically available within five business days. Home tests cost around $195 with no Medicare rebate currently applicable for the home-specific pathway, though the hub's intake coordinators advise patients to check with their insurer first.
Neither option is a casual undertaking. Patients using in-lab facilities spend a full night in a monitored room with electrodes attached to the scalp, chest, and legs. The Westfield centre's rooms on the third floor are fitted with blackout blinds and temperature controls, and staff discourage patients from bringing phones into the sleep space. The point is to capture a representative night, not a good one.
The Numbers Behind the Problem
Sleep disorders affect roughly one in five adults at any given time, according to data published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in early 2025. Obstructive sleep apnoea alone is estimated to be undiagnosed in about 80 percent of moderate-to-severe cases, meaning a large share of West residents experiencing chronic fatigue, poor concentration, or morning headaches have never been formally assessed.
The West Community Health Network flagged sleep health as a priority area in its 2025-2027 strategic plan, citing a 34 percent increase in GP referrals for sleep-related concerns over the preceding two years. The network runs a free monthly information session called Sleep Sense at the Glenpark Community Centre on Hawthorn Street, the next one scheduled for July 22. The session is open to any resident and does not require a GP referral to attend.
For those who suspect a problem but aren't ready for a full referral, the Northgate Health Hub also offers a 20-minute screening consultation with a sleep health nurse for $45, bookable directly online. The nurse uses a validated tool called the Epworth Sleepiness Scale alongside a brief clinical history to determine whether a formal study is warranted.
If your GP does write a referral, ask specifically whether the clinic is accredited by the Australasian Sleep Association, both the Westfield and Northgate facilities hold that accreditation, which ensures consistent standards in equipment calibration and reporting. Bring a list of any medications you take, including supplements like melatonin, since several common substances affect sleep architecture and must be noted in the study report. And if eight weeks feels too long to wait, ask your GP whether an urgent referral pathway is available, both clinics maintain a short cancellation list that can sometimes shorten the wait considerably.
