Free Community Fitness Events Happening This Month in West
From dawn boot camps to Saturday yoga in the park, West's July calendar is packed with no-cost ways to move, and the timing couldn't be better.
How we reported this

Dozens of free group fitness sessions are running across West this July, with local councils, community groups and fitness studios collectively offering more than 40 events across the month, the highest concentration of no-cost programming the city's parks and recreation offices have logged in three years. The push lands squarely in the middle of winter, when participation in outdoor exercise typically drops by around 30 percent compared with summer months, according to data tracked by the West Active Communities Network.
That seasonal dip is exactly what organisers are trying to reverse. The cost-of-living squeeze has kept gym memberships out of reach for a significant slice of residents, a standard West fitness studio membership runs between $65 and $90 a month, and local health advocates have been vocal about the gap that leaves in access to structured physical activity. Free events eliminate the financial barrier entirely while preserving the accountability that comes from showing up somewhere with other people at a set time.
Where to Show Up This Month
Riverside Parklands, along the western embankment near Calloway Bridge, is hosting Tuesday and Thursday morning boot camps every week through July 31. The sessions run from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. and are organised by West Fit Collective, a volunteer-run group that formed in 2022 with roughly 12 members and now draws attendance of over 200 people per week across its various programs. No registration is required, you simply turn up in runners.
Hartley Reserve in the Northbank neighbourhood is running a different model. The West Community Yoga Project, in partnership with the local council's ActiveWest initiative, has scheduled Saturday-morning sessions every week from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Mats are provided for the first 40 participants. The project specifically targets people who have never tried yoga before, so sessions are pitched at a beginner level with modifications offered throughout.
The Ferndale Recreation Centre on Drummond Street is opening its group fitness studio free of charge every Wednesday evening in July from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., rotating through formats including HIIT, low-impact cardio and core conditioning. The centre typically charges $18 per casual class, making July's program a meaningful concession. Spots are capped at 35 and bookings open each Monday morning via the ActiveWest online portal.
The Evidence Behind Group Exercise
The community fitness model has solid backing in the research. A 2024 study published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science found that people who exercise in groups at least twice per week report 26 percent higher rates of sustained physical activity after six months than those exercising alone. The social component, knowing someone will notice if you don't show, functions as a low-cost behavioural nudge that no app has convincingly replicated.
West's own population data reinforces the need. The city's most recent community wellbeing survey, conducted in October 2025 and covering 3,400 respondents, found that 61 percent of residents aged 25 to 54 said they wanted to exercise more regularly but cited cost and motivation as the two biggest barriers, in that order. Free group events address both simultaneously.
For residents unsure where to begin, the ActiveWest portal at activewest.gov/july lists every free event by date, location and intensity level. The Ferndale Recreation Centre sessions fill fastest, so booking on Monday morning is advisable. Riverside Parklands boot camps are the most reliably weatherproof option, West Fit Collective runs them unless there is lightning, not merely rain. Anyone with an existing health condition or injury should check in with a local GP or physiotherapist before jumping into high-intensity formats. The sessions themselves are free; the advice to prepare properly costs nothing either.
