How to Start a Walking Group in Your Neighbourhood
Oud West residents are forming neighbourhood walking groups to build fitness routines around familiar streets and shared schedules.
How we reported this

More than 120 people joined the first three Oud West walking groups launched this spring through the local wellness network.
Interest has grown since the city health department released its 2025 activity report showing only 38 percent of adults in the district meet recommended weekly movement targets. Neighbourhood groups offer a low-cost way to change that number without gym fees or equipment. Organisers report that groups meeting twice weekly on fixed routes see higher turnout than one-off events.
Pick a route and set the basics
Start by choosing two or three streets that form a loop of 30 to 45 minutes. Many groups use the path along Bilderdijkstraat to the entrance of Westergas and back through the smaller lanes around Kinkerstraat. A second popular circuit begins at the Oud West Community Centre on Jan Pieter Heijestraat and follows the canal edge toward the former tram depot now used for public events. Register the group name with the centre for a 25-euro annual permit that covers insurance and access to notice boards.
Decide on a start time that works for shift workers and parents. Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 18:30 have drawn the largest numbers so far. Post the schedule on the centre’s digital board and on the neighbourhood app used by 4,800 local households. Keep the first session to eight to ten people so everyone can introduce themselves and adjust pace.
Keep the group running
Collect a one-time 10-euro contribution per member to cover printed route maps and a basic first-aid kit. Rotate the role of group leader every four weeks so no single person carries the load. Track attendance on a shared sheet; groups that hit 75 percent average attendance over eight weeks receive a small grant from the Oud West wellness fund for coffee or fruit at the end of walks.
After the first month, survey members on preferred distances and add an optional longer route on Saturdays that starts at the same community centre. New groups forming now can join the next coordinator meeting scheduled for 14 July at the centre to share ideas and avoid overlapping start times.
