Oud-West Residents Cut Stress With Daily Phone-Free Hours
Oud West residents report lower stress after committing to fixed daily windows without screens.
How we reported this
Oud West residents began 2026 by logging 47 minutes less daily screen time on average, according to data released last month by the neighbourhood health initiative.
The shift matters because constant notifications now interrupt sleep and focus for people living along streets such as Kinkerstraat and Bilderdijkstraat, where many work from small apartments with limited outdoor space.
Local programs already in place
The Oud West Wellness Network runs phone-free walking groups that start at 7:30 a.m. every Tuesday from the entrance of Westerpark on Pazzanistraat. Participants leave devices in a locked box at the nearby community centre before heading along the canal paths. A second group meets at the same spot on Thursday evenings and ends with tea at a café on Jan van Galenstraat.
Both sessions cost €6 per person and require advance booking through the network’s site, which has filled its 40-person limit for the past six weeks.
Evidence behind the approach
A 2025 study by researchers at the University of Amsterdam tracked 312 adults who set two phone-free hours each evening and recorded a 22 percent drop in self-reported stress scores after four weeks. The same group showed improved sleep duration by an average of 38 minutes per night when measured with wearable trackers.
Participants in Oud West who joined the walking groups added another layer by pairing the break with movement rather than simply switching off devices at home.
Anyone starting today can pick two fixed hours, such as 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., silence notifications, and place the phone in another room. The neighbourhood health initiative offers a free printable card with the schedule at its drop-in desk on Kinkerstraat every Monday morning.
