Temperature, Light and Noise Disrupt Sleep Quality for Oud West Residents
Urban conditions around temperature swings, street lighting and traffic sounds are reducing rest hours for people living between the Overtoom and Kinkerstraat.
How we reported this
Sixty-two percent of adults surveyed in Oud West last month said they wake at least three times a night because of room temperature changes, bright outdoor lights or passing vehicles.
The findings arrive as more residents turn to local wellness groups after months of economic pressure that left many working irregular hours and skipping earlier bedtimes. Sleep loss now ranks among the top complaints at neighbourhood clinics, with staff noting a steady rise in requests for practical adjustments rather than medication.
Neighbourhood programmes track the effects
The Overtoom Wellness Hub on Overtoom has run evening sessions since March 2025 that measure bedroom conditions for participants using simple sensors. Across the canal, the Oud West Community Centre on Jan Pieter Heijestraat added a four-week sleep module last autumn that pairs residents with volunteers who log light levels and noise peaks between 22:00 and 06:00.
Both programmes report that bedrooms facing main roads register average night-time noise above 42 decibels, while south-facing flats without blackout blinds stay above 21 degrees Celsius until after midnight during summer weeks.
Evidence points to small fixes
A 2024 European Sleep Research Society review of 1,800 adults found that keeping bedroom temperature between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius raised total sleep time by 32 minutes on average. The same analysis showed that reducing light exposure below 10 lux after 21:00 cut the time needed to fall asleep by 14 minutes. In Oud West, blackout curtain sets start at 48 euros at the hardware store on Bilderdijkstraat, while basic white-noise machines cost 35 euros at the pharmacy on Kinkerstraat.
Residents can start tonight by closing curtains at dusk, setting the thermostat two degrees lower than daytime levels and placing a folded towel under the door to muffle hallway sounds. The Overtoom Wellness Hub posts updated checklists every Monday on its noticeboard for anyone who wants to track changes over a full week.
