Noord's Dog Parks Now Host Community Fitness Classes Weekly

Three mornings a week at 7:30, owners and dogs gather at the fenced lawn beside Meeuwenlaan for circuit sessions that include lunges, resistance-band rows and short sprints while leashed pets wait at marked posts.

Interest in these combined activities has risen sharply this spring after the city extended park lighting hours and installed new water bowls at multiple entrances. Local wellness groups report that residents who once trained indoors now prefer outdoor spots that accommodate both exercise and pet care without extra travel.

Two established locations

Noorderpark, between Meeuwenlaan and the IJ, runs a Tuesday and Thursday “Paws and Reps” program led by the Noord Active collective; sessions start at the main gate and finish near the new agility course installed last October. A second site at Buikslotermeerplein features a gravel loop used by the local cycling club for warm-ups before the 6 p.m. dog-friendly boot-camp class that costs €8 per participant and accepts up to 25 people.

Both parks added signage this year directing users to separate zones for high-energy drills and calmer stretching areas so dogs on leads do not interfere with equipment. The city installed the first set of permanent benches with built-in resistance bands at Noorderpark in March 2025.

Numbers behind the trend

A 2025 municipal survey counted 1,240 regular participants across Noord’s dog-friendly fitness programs, up from 870 the previous year. Average attendance at the Tuesday sessions now reaches 42 people, and the waiting list for the monthly orientation walk on the first Saturday of each month closes within 48 hours. Drop-in fees remain at €5 for residents who bring proof of local address.

Organisers advise newcomers to arrive ten minutes early at either gate to register and to keep dogs on a standard six-foot lead during the timed intervals. Updated schedules appear on the Noord Active website each Monday, listing any weather-related changes before 6 a.m.
