Noord Walkers Rank 8 Trails: 2km Easy Loop to Challenging Ridge Scramble
From a flat 2km canal loop to a lung-busting ridge scramble, here is every trail ranked so you can stop guessing and start walking.
How we reported this
Noord has 23 mapped walking trails within its municipal boundaries. Most residents know about two of them. That gap matters, particularly this July, when the city's parks department reported a 34 percent surge in first-time trail registrations compared to the same period in 2025, driven partly by a new free-access policy that dropped the weekend parking fee at Rietbergpark from β¬4.50 to zero starting 1 June.
The timing is not accidental. Urban wellness programs across northern European cities have spent the past three years pushing outdoor movement as a low-cost, low-barrier mental health intervention. Noord's own Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst, the municipal health service, published a position paper in March 2026 recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate outdoor activity per week per adult, citing local survey data showing 61 percent of Noord residents fall short of that target. Walking trails, the paper argued, are the most accessible tool the city already owns.
So which trails are actually worth your time? The Daily Noord spent three weeks logging them by distance, elevation gain, and surface type. Here is what we found.
The Easy End: Flat Routes for Every Fitness Level
Start at the Noorderkanaal loop. It runs 2.1 kilometres along the eastern towpath from the Havenstraat footbridge to the Molenbrug junction, entirely paved, zero elevation change, and lit until 22:00 most evenings. It is the city's most walked route, the parks department's automated counter clocked 4,200 passes last Tuesday alone, and for good reason. You can push a buggy, wear street shoes, and still hit your step count before breakfast.
Step up slightly to the Vondelkade Riverside Walk, a 4.7km out-and-back along the southern bank of the Vondelkade waterway. The surface alternates between compacted gravel and wooden boardwalk. Elevation gain is negligible at roughly 8 metres total, but the route crosses two pedestrian bridges and passes the community orchard managed by Stichting Groen Noord, a volunteer-run urban greening organisation that has maintained the path edges since 2019. Dogs are welcome; keep them leashed between May and August because of nesting birds in the reed sections near kilometre 3.
For families with children, the Rietbergpark Nature Circuit is a signed 3.2km loop inside the park's eastern section, opening at Lange Dreef and returning via the children's pond. The circuit was redesigned in April 2025 to include eight interpretation boards on local bird species, and the surface is bark-chip throughout, softer underfoot, accessible for trail runners wanting a recovery day.
The Hard End: Elevation, Distance, and Serious Effort
Noord's most demanding route is the Hoogveld Ridge Trail, a 9.4km point-to-point running from the Bergweg tram stop (line 7) north to the Oude Molen viewpoint. Total elevation gain sits at 210 metres, modest by mountain standards, punishing by city standards. The final 1.4 kilometres is an uneven stone path with a 12 percent average gradient. Trail shoes are not optional here. The Noord Wandelclub, which organises guided hikes every second Saturday, rates this one a 3 out of 3 for difficulty and recommends a minimum fitness base of 8km comfortable walking before attempting it.
Between the Vondelkade Walk and the Hoogveld Ridge sits the Buitenring Circular, 6.8km of mixed terrain skirting the city's outer green belt. Elevation gain reaches 95 metres via a series of short, sharp rises through the Spoorlaan woodland section. The Noord Wandelclub added this route to its official program in January 2026 and has run it 11 times since, averaging 18 participants per outing.
Practical notes before you head out. The parks department's free trail map, updated in May 2026, is downloadable via the gemeente website or available in printed form at the Rietbergpark visitor kiosk, open daily 09:00-17:00. The Noorderkanaal loop and Vondelkade Walk are accessible year-round in all weather. The Hoogveld Ridge Trail is marked as closed when conditions make the upper stone path hazardous; check the gemeente's parks status board before travelling. For personalised advice on which distance and intensity suits your current health, speak to a local GP or physiotherapist rather than relying on trail ratings alone.
