Nieuw West's Top Walking Trails Rated by Distance and Difficulty
Updated assessments from the district parks office rank routes across Osdorp and Slotermeer for length and terrain challenge ahead of peak summer use.
How we reported this
Nieuw West parks staff completed fresh measurements of five main trails this month and assigned ratings that separate short flat walks from longer routes with elevation and uneven ground.
The rankings arrive as residents increase outdoor time during longer daylight hours and after the Nieuw West council expanded its free fitness equipment installations at two sites last spring.
Sloterpark in Osdorp contains the longest marked loop at 7.8 kilometres that starts near the Sloterplas boathouse and circles the water with two short inclines near the western edge. The route carries a moderate difficulty label because of gravel sections that can soften after rain. Erasmuspark in the Slotermeer neighbourhood offers a 3.2 kilometre circuit rated easy that follows paved paths around the central lawns and connects directly to the Ringvaart canal towpath for an optional extension.
The Nieuw West Outdoor Fitness Initiative, run through the district sports office, added signposts and QR codes on both trails in April 2025 so users can log distances on their phones without extra apps.
Measured distances and surface details
District records show the Sloterpark loop averages 95 minutes at a steady pace while the Erasmuspark circuit takes 40 minutes. A 2025 health survey by the Nieuw West council found 62 percent of respondents walk at least three times a week, with canal-side paths listed as the most used option. Entry remains free at both parks and parking near the Sloterplas entrance costs 2.50 euros per hour on weekdays.
Choosing a route this week
Walkers new to the area can begin with the easy Erasmuspark loop and add the canal spur for extra distance. Those seeking more challenge should start at the Sloterpark boathouse before 9am to avoid midday crowds. The parks department posts daily surface updates on its website and recommends sturdy shoes for the gravel stretches in Sloterpark.
