Nieuw West Top Walking Trails Rated by Distance and Difficulty
Residents can choose routes through Sloterpark and along the Erasmusgracht based on measured lengths and elevation changes.
How we reported this
Three trails in Nieuw West stand out this July for their documented distances and varying difficulty levels drawn from district mapping data.
Outdoor activity has risen in Nieuw West since the Nieuw West Outdoor Fitness Initiative began in April 2026. The program added signage and benches at key entry points. Local health workers report more residents asking about safe routes during routine check-ups at the Slotervaart health centre.
Sloterpark contains the 4.2-kilometre moderate loop that starts at the north gate on Osdorper Ban and circles the Sloterplas. The path includes two short inclines near the sports fields. The Erasmusgracht trail runs 6.8 kilometres from the bridge at Meer en Vaart to the western edge of Westgaarde. This route stays flat but covers longer stretches without shade. A shorter option inside Sloterpark covers 1.9 kilometres on level ground near the playground at the south end.
Trail ratings by distance and difficulty
District records from June 2026 list the Sloterpark moderate loop at 4.2 kilometres with 35 metres of total elevation gain. The Erasmusgracht route measures 6.8 kilometres with only 12 metres of gain. The short Sloterpark circuit records 1.9 kilometres and zero measurable incline. These figures come from the Nieuw West Parks Department survey completed on 12 June.
Access details and next steps
All three trails remain open daily with no entry fees. The Nieuw West Walking Club meets at 08:00 on Tuesdays at the Sloterpark north gate to cover the moderate loop. Walkers can find printed maps at the information board beside the Meer en Vaart bridge. Residents should check weather updates from the district website before heading out on longer routes.
