Jordaan Residents Discover Two Weekly Parkruns Drawing Hundreds Saturdays
Jordaan residents can choose between two established weekly routes that draw hundreds each Saturday morning.
How we reported this

More than 420 runners turned out for the Westerpark edition of parkrun on 4 July, the highest single-week total recorded at the site since the route opened in 2019.
The surge coincides with longer daylight hours and a city push to promote free outdoor activity ahead of the summer school break, when many locals seek low-cost ways to maintain fitness routines without gym memberships.
Participants gather at the main lawn entrance off Haarlemmerspoorplein at 8:45 each Saturday for the 5-kilometre loop that circles the Westerpark ponds and finishes near the Westergasfabriek café cluster. A second option meets at the corner of Lindengracht and Brouwersgracht, where volunteers from the Jordaan Fit collective mark a flatter course along the canal paths and through the small community garden at Bloemgracht.
Route differences and access
The Westerpark course includes one short hill near the former gasworks buildings and draws a mix of serious club runners and families with pushchairs, while the Jordaan canal route stays almost entirely on paved paths and passes three playgrounds, making it more popular with beginners. Both events remain free and require only a free barcode from the national parkrun website, which volunteers scan at the finish.
Organisers report that 68 percent of this month’s finishers live within a 15-minute bike ride of either start line, according to post-run surveys collected between May and July. The events operate year-round regardless of weather, with the next sessions scheduled for 11 July at both locations.
Anyone new to the format can arrive 15 minutes early to receive a quick briefing from the volunteer team at either site, then join the mass start at 9am sharp. Runners are encouraged to bring their own water bottle, as no refreshments are supplied on site.
