Jordaan's Top Walking Trails, Rated by Distance and Difficulty
From a quick canal loop to a full cross-neighbourhood trek, here's where to lace up, and what to expect when you get there.
How we reported this
The Jordaan has more kilometres of walkable canal path than most Amsterdam residents realise. On a Sunday morning in July, Prinsengracht alone draws dozens of walkers before 8 a.m., many of them following routes they've pieced together themselves from habit rather than any formal guide. That patchwork approach is about to get a serious upgrade.
Summer 2026 has brought a renewed push for structured outdoor fitness in the neighbourhood, partly driven by the broader European conversation about public health infrastructure, including ongoing debates in cities like London about restoring lost public swimming and fitness spaces. In the Jordaan, the answer has never been a single grand facility. It's the streets themselves, and a growing number of residents and local trainers are treating them as such.
The Routes, Ranked
Easy, Prinsengracht Canal Loop (2.4 km): Start at the corner of Prinsengracht and Westerstraat, walk south along the western bank to Leidsegracht, cross the bridge, and return north on the eastern bank. Flat the entire way, with consistent pavement. Ideal for early mornings or recovery days. Total elevation change is negligible, this is Amsterdam, after all. The route passes the Westerkerk tower, a useful halfway landmark, before looping back through the quieter residential stretch near Elandsgracht.
Moderate, Jordaan to Westerpark Circuit (4.1 km): This one demands a bit more planning. Begin on Haarlemmerdijk, head west through the Haarlemmerbuurt, and enter Westerpark from the Haarlemmerweg gate. The park itself covers roughly 18 hectares and includes gravel paths, a paved perimeter track, and a grass section that gets muddy after rain, worth knowing in July. Return via Nassaukade along the canal edge. The route includes two significant bridge crossings, which add minor incline. Total walking time at a brisk pace: around 50 minutes.
Challenging, Full Neighbourhood Boundary Walk (7.8 km): This is the one that separates the committed walkers from the occasional strollers. The route traces the outer edges of the Jordaan from Marnixstraat in the east, north along the IJ-side approach near Westerdok, west to the edge of Westerpark, then south through the quieter streets of the Oud-West border and back along Looiersgracht. It's not hilly, nothing here is, but the distance and the mixed surface types, including some uneven brick sections near Karthuizerplantsoen, make it genuinely demanding if you're pushing pace.
Local Programmes and Where to Start
The Vondelgym, which operates a community fitness programme out of a location near the Jordaan's southern edge, runs guided outdoor walking and jogging sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings through the summer months. Sessions begin at 7:30 a.m. and are open to all fitness levels, with the group splitting by pace after the first 500 metres. The cost for non-members is β¬8 per session as of July 2026.
Westerpark itself hosts a free Parkrun-style event on Saturday mornings, 5 kilometres, timed, no registration required beyond a one-time barcode sign-up at parkrun.com. The course runs a double loop of the park's main path, starting near the Westergas cultural complex on Pazzanistraat. Average finish times for the Westerpark route in the past three months have clustered around 28 to 34 minutes, according to publicly available Parkrun results data.
A 2024 report from the Amsterdam Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst (GGD) found that adults who walk more than 8,000 steps per day show measurably lower rates of cardiovascular risk factors, a figure that aligns with the longer boundary route above covering roughly 10,000 steps at average stride length. The GGD Amsterdam publishes annual neighbourhood health data, and the Jordaan consistently ranks among the city's more physically active districts.
The practical advice is straightforward: pick your distance first, not your route. The Jordaan's canal grid makes improvisation easy, but having a defined circuit stops a 30-minute walk from becoming a five-minute wander followed by a coffee stop. Download the Komoot app, search for Jordaan walking routes, and you'll find community-uploaded versions of all three circuits above with user ratings and surface notes. Wear flat-soled shoes on the brick sections, and give yourself the first 15 minutes slowly, the streets are uneven enough that a twisted ankle on Bloemgracht before 7 a.m. is a real risk, and nobody wants that on a Sunday. Consult a local GP or physiotherapist before starting any new fitness programme if you have existing joint or cardiovascular concerns.
