De Pijp Residents Transform Dog Walks Into Group Fitness Sessions This July
De Pijp residents turn daily dog walks into group workouts at two central green spaces this July.
How we reported this

De Pijp residents have packed Sarphatipark every morning since 1 July for sessions that mix dog agility drills with human circuit training.
Summer heat and longer daylight hours have pushed more people outdoors after indoor gym memberships rose 12 percent across Amsterdam in 2025. Local wellness groups now treat the neighborhood parks as free extensions of their studios, cutting commute time for residents who live between the Ferdinand Bolstraat and the Ceintuurbaan.
Sarphatipark offers a fenced dog zone at its eastern edge where trainers set up cones and low hurdles for joint warm-ups. A short walk south, the smaller green strip beside the Gerard Doustraat hosts an informal bootcamp every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30am, complete with resistance bands and water bowls supplied by the nearby café.
Two spots drawing consistent crowds
At Sarphatipark the city installed new agility equipment in March 2026 at a cost of €18,000. The additions include balance beams and weave poles that accommodate both large and small dogs while owners perform parallel body-weight exercises. The Gerard Doustraat strip added a single pull-up bar and two bench stations last autumn, funded through a neighborhood improvement grant that also paid for extra waste bins to handle increased foot traffic.
Amsterdam city data released in June 2026 recorded 2,400 participants across De Pijp park fitness programs in the first half of the year, with dog-inclusive events accounting for roughly one third of the total. Sessions remain free or capped at €10 when an instructor supplies equipment.
How to join a session this week
Arrive at the Sarphatipark dog zone before 8am to catch the largest group. Bring a six-foot lead and water for your dog; the city posts updated schedules on the neighborhood notice board at the park entrance each Monday. For the Gerard Doustraat strip, check the De Pijp community app for weather cancellations and arrive with your own mat. Both locations stay open until 10pm, though early mornings draw the strongest turnout before office hours begin.
