Walking Trails De Pijp: 5 Rated Routes by Distance
Discover five mapped walking trails in De Pijp graded by distance and elevation. From the 1.9km Sarphatipark loop to the 8.4km Amstel riverbank route, find your perfect local walk.
How we reported this

De Pijp now offers five mapped walking trails graded by exact distance and elevation gain, with the longest stretching 8.4 kilometres along the Amstel riverbank and the shortest looping 1.9 kilometres inside Sarphatipark.
City health officials released the ratings on 15 June after recording a 22 percent rise in park visits last year, part of a broader push to keep residents active during the longer summer daylight hours that began in late May.
The shortest option starts at the entrance to Sarphatipark on the corner of Ceintuurbaan and stays on flat gravel paths that circle the central pond twice before returning to the same gate. A second route begins at the Albert Cuypmarkt stalls and follows Ferdinand Bolstraat south for 3.7 kilometres to the footbridge at Amsteldijk, crossing only one set of tram tracks at the Ruysdaelkade intersection.
Moderate and longer options
Walkers seeking more challenge can join the 5.2-kilometre loop that leaves from the De Pijp Outdoor Wellness Initiative notice board near the Sarphatipark playground, climbs the gentle slope beside the tennis courts, then returns along the quiet residential stretch of 1e Jacob van Lennepkade. The most demanding route adds the full Amstel river path past the former Heineken brewery site and finishes at the same starting point after 8.4 kilometres with 48 metres of total ascent.
Guided group walks on the moderate route cost 4 euros per person and depart every Saturday at 09:00 from the notice board; advance registration through the Pijp Fit Club website is required because places fill by Thursday evening. Participants must bring their own water bottle, as no vending machines operate inside the park after 20:00.
Next steps for residents
Anyone planning to start this weekend should check the city’s open-data map for the latest surface conditions after last week’s rain and speak with a local general practitioner before attempting the longer routes. The Pijp Fit Club will host a free 30-minute orientation session at the Sarphatipark playground on Sunday morning at 10:00 for those who want to see the trail markings in person.
