How we reported this
De Pijp is getting a summer fitness calendar worth clearing your schedule for. At least seven community movement events, including three charity-linked fun runs and two neighbourhood walking series, are scheduled between mid-July and late September 2026, making this one of the busiest outdoor fitness seasons the district has seen in recent years.
The timing is deliberate. Dutch health researchers at Amsterdam UMC have been tracking a post-2024 dip in regular physical activity among urban adults aged 25 to 45, with survey data showing that 38 percent of Amsterdam residents in that bracket get fewer than the nationally recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Event organisers and local sports associations have responded with programming designed to lower the barrier, no club membership, no performance pressure, no expensive kit required.
What's On and Where to Find It
The anchor event is the Sarphatipark Solidarity Run on Saturday 19 July, a 5km and 10km loop organised by Stichting De Pijp Beweegt, the neighbourhood's community sports foundation. Registration costs €8 for the 5km and €12 for the 10km, with proceeds split between Voedselbank Amsterdam and the local youth sports fund. The start line is at the Gerard Doustraat entrance to Sarphatipark at 9:00am. Walkers are explicitly welcome in both distances.
Two weeks later, on 2 August, the Albert Cuyp Charity Walk takes a more leisurely approach. Organised in partnership with the Albert Cuypmarkt traders association and the neighbourhood's older adult centre De Meevaart, it's a 7km flat route that traces the Amstel south before looping back through the Ceintuurbaan. Entry is free, though participants are encouraged to fundraise a minimum of €25 for Alzheimer Nederland. Last year's walk drew 340 participants and raised just over €11,000.
For those wanting something more structured across the full season, the Pijp Parkrun equivalent, an informal 5km time trial held every Saturday morning at 8:30am starting from the fountain in Sarphatipark, continues through September without a break. It's free, it's timed, and it requires only a one-time barcode registration at parkrun.nl. Average weekly turnout this spring was 87 runners.
Group Yoga, Bootcamps and the Longer View
Beyond running and walking, several fitness operators along the Ferdinand Bolstraat corridor have announced free outdoor sessions tied to the charity events. Studio Zomerkracht, based near the Heineken Experience on Stadhouderskade, is running complimentary Saturday bootcamp sessions every weekend in July at 7:45am in Sarphatipark, open to all fitness levels, no booking needed, just show up with water and a mat. Their stated goal is to shift at least a portion of participants toward paid memberships by September, but the sessions themselves carry no strings.
The neighbourhood's running club, De Pijp Runners, meets every Tuesday at 19:00 from the corner of Ruysdaelkade and Cornelis Troostplein. The club offers three pace groups, 5:30, 6:30 and 8:00 minutes per kilometre, and membership costs €40 for the year. They're volunteering as marshals for the 19 July Sarphatipark Solidarity Run and have committed to recruiting 50 new members before the end of August.
The broader wellness shift behind all of this is worth naming plainly. Group exercise is consistently associated with higher adherence rates than solo training, a 2023 meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity found that people exercising in social settings were 26 percent more likely to still be active six months later. The community event format tries to capitalise on exactly that.
For anyone wanting to start now rather than wait for a formal event: the Sarphatipark circuit is 1.2km per loop, flat and open from 6:00am daily. The Albert Cuypmarkt area empties by 17:30 on weekday afternoons and makes for an unusually quiet urban walking route. Registration links for both the Solidarity Run and the Charity Walk are available via the Stichting De Pijp Beweegt website. And as always, if you're returning to exercise after a significant gap or managing any health condition, a check-in with your huisarts before the start line is the sensible first step.
