Centrum Residents Launch Walking Groups to Build Community Fitness
Neighbourhood residents in Centrum are turning to organised walks as a simple way to meet fitness goals and connect with others.
How we reported this
More than 40 people joined the first session of the Riverside Trail Walkers on July 8 at the entrance to Riverside Park, marking the latest addition to Centrum's growing list of resident-led fitness groups.
Interest in group walks has risen steadily since the Centrum Wellness Initiative expanded its community outreach in January 2025, with city records showing 18 new walking groups registered in the past 12 months. The trend reflects broader demand for low-cost activities that fit around work and family schedules without requiring gym memberships or equipment.
Two established programs provide models for new organisers. The Maple Grove Walkers meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 a.m. outside the Maple Grove Community Center on Oak Street, while the Elm Avenue Striders gather at the corner of Elm Avenue and 5th Street before heading into Centennial Gardens. Both groups began with one resident posting a notice on the neighbourhood bulletin board and now maintain waiting lists for new members.
Steps to get a group moving
Organisers recommend starting with a fixed route of two to three kilometres and a consistent time slot, such as weekday evenings after 6 p.m. or weekend mornings. A simple sign-up sheet at the local library branch or a post on the Centrum Community Network page can draw initial participants. The city health department reports that groups meeting at least twice weekly see average attendance rates of 65 percent after the first month, based on registration data collected through June 2026.
Insurance and safety checks come next. Contacting the Centrum Parks Department at least two weeks in advance secures permission to use public paths and provides access to free first-aid kits for group leaders. Participants are advised to wear reflective vests on routes that cross busy streets like Riverside Drive.
Building momentum over time
Once the first walks are underway, groups often add optional elements such as monthly distance challenges or partnerships with nearby cafes for post-walk coffee. The Maple Grove Walkers now average 22 participants per session after introducing a simple mileage tracker funded by a $150 grant from the local Rotary chapter. New leaders can track similar progress by logging attendance on a shared spreadsheet and adjusting routes based on feedback collected at the end of each month.
