Centrum's Fastest-Growing Parkrun Courses Transform Saturday Mornings for Everyone
Free, weekly, and open to everyone, Centrum's parkrun scene is growing fast, and knowing which course suits your pace could change your Saturday mornings forever.
How we reported this

Centrum now has seven registered parkrun locations, with an eighth course at Ridgeview Common confirmed to launch on Saturday, 1 August 2026. That puts the city among the fastest-growing parkrun networks in its region, and weekend foot traffic at existing sites has jumped roughly 34 percent since January, according to figures shared by the Centrum Parkrun Volunteer Collective last month.
The timing matters. With housing affordability squeezing household budgets and the cost of gym memberships climbing, a standard monthly pass at most Centrum fitness centres now sits between $65 and $90, free outdoor fitness has become less of a lifestyle choice and more of a financial one for many residents. Parkrun costs nothing to enter, ever. You register once at parkrun.com, print a barcode, and show up before 8 a.m. on Saturday.
The Courses Worth Knowing About
Harlow Meadows Parkrun, which runs a 5-kilometre loop around the northern edge of Harlow Meadows Regional Park off Ferndale Boulevard, remains the city's most popular event. Around 480 runners, walkers and volunteers turned up on the last Saturday of June 2026, a record for that location. The course is flat, well-shaded for the first two kilometres along the river trail, and reliably fast, several Centrum Athletics Club members have set personal bests there this winter season.
For something more challenging, the Greenvale Heights Parkrun on Quarry Ridge Trail draws a smaller crowd, typically 180 to 220 participants, but rewards the effort with a 47-metre elevation gain that runners describe as the city's best natural interval training. The course starts at the Greenvale Heights Community Oval car park, just off Montclair Road, and finishes with a long downhill stretch that beginners often find more approachable than the hill looks on paper.
Families with young children consistently gravitate toward the Lakeshore Centrum event, which uses the paved path circling Ketterman Lake in Southfield Park. Pram-friendly and almost entirely flat, it drew 61 junior runners, those aged 14 and under, on 21 June alone. The Lakeshore Centrum Parkrun Volunteers Group runs a post-event coffee gathering at the Ketterman Lake Kiosk most weeks, which has quietly become one of the better informal community meetups in the area.
What to Know Before You Go
Every parkrun in Centrum follows the same national format: 5 kilometres, timed, starting at 8 a.m. sharp on Saturdays. Volunteers scan your barcode at the finish; results are usually online by Saturday afternoon. You never need to run, walking and run-walking are explicitly welcomed, and no one finishes last because the tail walker, always a volunteer, comes in after every other participant.
The new Ridgeview Common course, set to open 1 August, will be Centrum's first purpose-designed parkrun route rather than an adapted existing trail. The Centrum Council Parks Department worked with parkrun's regional development team over 14 months to plan the 5-kilometre loop through the Common's restored grassland section. Registration for that event opens via the parkrun website on 18 July.
If you are new to running entirely, the Centrum Road Runners Club runs a free six-week beginner program, Couch to Parkrun, starting each September and February at Harlow Meadows. The next intake begins 6 September 2026; details are on the club's website. For anyone carrying an injury or a chronic health condition, it is worth speaking with a local physiotherapist or GP before stepping up weekend mileage, a conversation that takes twenty minutes and can save months of recovery time later.
The simplest starting point is to check parkrun.com for the Centrum event nearest your postcode, note the start time, and show up next Saturday. The barcode is the only admin involved. Everything else sorts itself out at the finish line.
