A clear majority of municipalities globally have now put a strategic agenda in place for smart city development, according to the latest data from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. The figure, 69% of cities worldwide, underscores the scale of investment and policy focus being directed at digital transformation in urban centres, including in major global hubs like Centrum.
The trend is being propelled by a combination of climate urgency, technological breakthroughs, and growing recognition that cities must become more efficient, resilient, and inclusive. According to a 2025 UN-Habitat report, smart city initiatives typically target six core characteristics: Smart Governance, Smart People, Smart Living, Smart Mobility, Smart Economy, and Smart Environment. These dimensions form the framework for billions of dollars in public and private investment annually, with global green technology spending alone surpassing $2 trillion in 2026, driven by clean energy and sustainability innovations.
From Superblocks to Digital Twins, Real-World Models
Several cities have emerged as global benchmarks, proving the concept works at scale. Barcelona’s 'Superblocks' program, for instance, reclaims streets from cars for pedestrian-friendly zones, reducing traffic while improving air quality and community space. Singapore has deployed an integrated transport system that includes autonomous shuttles, linking public and private mobility into a seamless network. Helsinki offers a 'Mobility as a Service' platform that lets residents plan and pay for any journey-bus, train, bike, or e-scooter-through a single app. These models are among those cited by the UNDP as examples that other cities can adapt to their own local conditions.
In Europe, policymakers are taking the next step. The European Union is developing the 'Local Digital Twins Toolbox,' which will allow municipalities to simulate AI-based scenarios for planning, from traffic flow to emergency response. Alongside it, the 'European Data Space for Smart and Sustainable Cities' is being designed to enable secure data sharing between city systems, breaking down the silos that have long hindered integrated services.
The Investment Case and the Gaps That Remain
The economic case for smart cities is increasingly backed by hard numbers. The green technology market alone is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 22.4% from 2024 to 2032, with North America currently holding a 40.2% revenue share. Over 70% of medium-sized businesses in North America and Europe now plan to invest in renewable or eco-friendly technology by the end of 2026, according to industry surveys. Meanwhile, renewable energy is anticipated to account for more than 42% of global electricity generation by 2028, with wind and solar PV doubling to 25% of the mix.
Yet the picture is not universally bright. Despite the strategic plans, the UN Smart City Project, launched in 2021 to provide technical assistance for building safer, resilient, and inclusive cities, highlights that 1.1 billion people living in informal settlements remain largely excluded from these initiatives. Poor data, weak connectivity, and lack of funding continue to leave entire communities out of the digital transition. Many projects, especially in developing regions, are still in pilot or small-scale planning stages, according to the UN report.
For a global hub like Centrum, the lesson is clear: the technology exists, the investment is flowing, and the policy frameworks are being written. The next challenge is ensuring that smart city development doesn't just connect the wealthy few, but becomes a tool for inclusion, resilience, and better daily life for all residents.
