Oud West City Council Approves 2026 Transit Funding Measure, Shifting Route Subsidies for Commuters

The Oud West City Council voted 8-3 on July 7 to approve the 2026 Transit Funding Measure, which redirects 1.8 million euros from the municipal operating budget to subsidize expanded bus service on routes 12, 18 and 27. The policy change affects residents who use these lines for work trips to the central business district and for access to the Oud West health clinic and market district.

The vote follows the release of the city's 2026 budget papers in June, which projected a 4 percent rise in operating costs for the transit authority due to fuel prices and vehicle maintenance. Council records show the measure was introduced to address documented shortfalls in service frequency reported by the transit authority in its March quarterly update.

Effects on daily travel and household costs

Under the approved measure, fares on the three subsidized routes will drop by 15 percent for monthly pass holders beginning January 1, 2027. Residents living within 400 meters of stops on routes 12 and 18 will gain two additional evening departures each weekday. Households without cars who commute to jobs at the Oud West industrial park stand to reduce monthly transport spending by an estimated 22 euros, according to the budget paper's modeling section.

Local businesses located along the extended segments of route 27 will receive no direct allocation, though the legislation states the added service is expected to increase foot traffic by an unspecified amount. Taxi operators and ride-hailing drivers who serve the same corridors receive no offsetting adjustment in the measure.

The transit authority must publish revised timetables by October 2026 and complete procurement for two additional vehicles by December.
