Oost City Council Rates Relief Measure Caps Increases for 2026-27 Budget Year

Oost City Council approved a rates relief measure on 7 July that caps annual increases for residential properties at 2.8 per cent for the 2026-27 financial year. The policy applies to all rateable homes within the municipality and replaces the previous uncapped adjustment process used in prior budgets.

Local budget pressures prompt the change

Council documents show the decision follows sustained rises in operational costs for waste services and road maintenance recorded in the 2025-26 financial statements. The measure responds to household budget strain reported through resident submissions during the annual rates consultation period held in May.

Under the cap, a typical single-family dwelling assessed at the median value will see its annual rates bill rise by no more than 68 euros compared with the current year. Multi-unit properties and commercial sites remain subject to the standard valuation-based formula without the percentage limit.

Residents will receive their updated rates notices by 15 August, with the first quarterly instalment due on 1 September. The change reduces the amount allocated from household income for council charges, leaving more funds available for groceries, utilities and transport costs that have increased over the past twelve months.

Policy analysts note the cap will affect approximately 42,000 residential assessments across Oost. Low-income households eligible for existing council rebates will continue to receive those concessions on top of the new limit, according to the 2026-27 budget papers released on 8 July.

Implementation begins immediately, with the finance department required to recalculate all residential notices before the August distribution date. Council staff will publish a comparison tool on the municipal website by 20 July to allow property owners to view the difference between the capped amount and the uncapped calculation.
