Nieuw West Freezes Municipal Fees for 2026-2027, Protecting Household Budgets

The Nieuw West municipal council approved the Local Rates Stabilisation Measure on 7 July 2026. The policy caps increases on property tax assessments, waste collection charges and parking permit fees through June 2027. It directly affects the 142,000 households within the Nieuw West jurisdiction.
National inflation figures released in June showed a 3.8 percent rise in household energy and food costs over the past year. Local government revenue papers for 2025-2026 recorded that council rates already accounted for 11 percent of average resident expenditure on essential services. The new measure responds to those pressures by holding the line on further local additions.
Changes to specific charges
Under the measure, the standard residential waste collection fee stays at 312 euros per year. The annual parking permit for zone A remains 168 euros. Property tax assessments for homes valued below 450,000 euros will use the same valuation roll applied in 2025. These three items together represent the largest recurring local costs for most Nieuw West residents.
Budget documents released by the finance department project that the average household will avoid an additional 87 euros in combined charges that would have applied under the previous schedule. Single-person households in social housing are expected to see the smallest absolute change, while families in owner-occupied properties above 400,000 euros will record the largest nominal freeze.
Implementation begins 1 September 2026. Residents will receive updated invoices with the stabilised amounts by 15 August. The council will publish a mid-year review in January 2027 that compares actual revenue against the projections contained in the July budget paper.
