Nieuw West Community Services Referendum Sets Funding Levels for Local Programs

The Nieuw West Community Services Referendum, scheduled for 15 July, asks residents to approve or reject a measure that would adjust the allocation of municipal revenue toward specified social programs. Passage would increase the share of local funds directed to community centers, family counseling and employment assistance offices operating within district boundaries.

Local government records show that Nieuw West has operated under the current community services framework established in the 2022 municipal ordinance. That ordinance set baseline funding levels that have remained unchanged through subsequent annual budgets. The referendum arises after the city council voted in May to place the question before voters following a review of service utilization data from the past three years.

Residents who rely on after-school programs at the Slotermeer community center would see extended operating hours if the measure passes. Families using the food distribution point on Osdorpplein could receive additional weekly allocations. Job seekers registered with the district employment office would gain access to expanded training sessions held at the local technical college campus.

Budget Figures and Service Coverage

The referendum proposal document states that approval would transfer an additional 1.8 million euros from general municipal revenue to the community services line item in the 2027 fiscal year. Current records list 4,200 households registered for at least one of the covered services as of the end of 2025. The Productivity Commission report on municipal social spending, released in March, identified Nieuw West as one of the districts where demand for these programs exceeded budgeted capacity by 12 percent.

Voters will receive a printed guide with their ballots that lists each service category and the projected change in hours or participant slots. The guide draws directly from the city treasurer’s office projections and contains no additional policy recommendations.

Ballots will be counted on the evening of 15 July at the central counting facility on Pieter Calandlaan. The city clerk’s office has stated that certified results will be posted on the municipal website within 48 hours and forwarded to the relevant departments for implementation planning if the measure receives majority support.
