The Centrum mayor's office completed the rollout schedule for the 2026 Vehicle Registration Adjustment on July 7, directing the municipal finance department to issue new billing statements to all 187,000 registered vehicle owners inside city limits.
City council approved the measure in June after reviewing the 2026-27 budget papers that identified a $2.4 million shortfall in road maintenance accounts. The adjustment raises the base annual fee by $38 for passenger cars and $52 for light trucks, with the first payments due when owners renew registrations on or after October 1.
Payment and Service Timeline
Residents in the Riverside and Hilltop neighborhoods will see the change first because their renewal cycles cluster in the final quarter. A household with two standard vehicles will pay an extra $76 per year, collected through the existing online portal or at the three municipal service centers on Main Street, Oak Avenue and River Road.
Local advocates note that the legislation states the new revenue must be spent only on pavement repairs within the 12 designated maintenance zones, none of which cross into unincorporated county land. The finance department projects the full $2.4 million will be collected by March 2027.
Notices explaining the exact amount owed will be mailed beginning August 15, giving owners six weeks to update payment methods or request hardship extensions before the October deadline. The government says the policy will produce quarterly progress reports posted on the city website starting in January 2027.
City hall has scheduled two public information sessions at the central library on August 22 and 29 to answer questions about the new fee structure and the list of scheduled road projects for each zone.
